BILL R. HOGAN
April 17, 1934 ~ January 8, 2015
Teacher and School Administrator
Bill R. Hogan, 80, died at home in Vancouver, WA, on Thurs., Jan. 8, 2015, after a two-and-a-half year battle with cancer. The youngest of three children of Roy and Alma Hogan, Bill was born in Neodesha, KS on April 17, 1934. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Lawrence, KS, where he graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1952, then received a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Kansas in 1956.
Bill married Marilyn LeSuer in Lawrence in 1954, beginning their 60-and-a-half wonderful years of marriage together.
While in Lawrence, Bill began making his first trips to the Northwest, driving to the Pendleton, OR area with friends to work summers in the pea canneries.
After completing two years in the Army at Ft. Benning Georgia in 1958, Bill headed to Eugene, OR where he earned a Masters degree at the University of Oregon. Then, while working as a travelling science teacher with the National Science Foundation, he was offered a teaching job in Vancouver, WA and he began teaching at Shumway Junior High School in 1960.
Until he retired in 1994, Bill served as a teacher and school administrator, including teaching chemistry at Columbia River High School, serving as Dean of Students at Fort Vancouver and Columbia River, and directing Math and Science instruction for the Vancouver School District.
Bill was an avid reader, loved music and the Oregon Coast. He was a master of mechanical repairs, particularly the antique clocks he enjoyed collecting. He was also an avid traveler, particularly to national parks and Europe, where he lived two extended stints. He taught at the American School of Paris in 1967-68 and in Frankfurt, Germany in 1989-91.
Bill served for years on the boards of the Ft. Vancouver Seafarers Center and iQ Credit Union. He also worked on many Habitat for Humanity projects and First United Methodist Church projects in Ocean Park, WA.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marilyn; sons, Dave (Cherie) of Portland, OR and Scott (Charlene) of Vancouver; daughters, Cindy (Ed) Kraft and Nancy (Todd) Bacon of Vancouver; grandchildren, Ben, Ryan, Curt, Allison, Kate, Eric and Caroline; and sister, Colleen Wilson of Topeka, KS.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Myrle.
Bill's memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 401 E 33rd St., Vancouver, WA 98663 at 1:00 p.m., Sat., Jan. 24, 2015.

Bill was my seventh grade science teacher at Columbia River in 1962 plus my junior high track coach. He always had a smile for me even many years later when I would see him. He will always be a pleasant memory for me. RIP Coach.

Our condolences to Marilyn and family. Bill will be missed by many. What I won't miss are memories of our great relationships over the years, particularly our adventures during our teen years: JrH/HS football, repairing multiple Model A Fords, 16 hour days freezing/packing peas in Pendleton, nursing old failing Chevs and Plymouths, being washed out of sleeping bags by the tide on an Oregon beach, etc. Most impressive traits of Bill's were his courage and grace shown during his long battle with cancer; his highly successful organization of multiple High School Reunions; and his dedicated service to multiple charitable organizations. May Bill now rest in eternal peace with the Lord

While at Columbia River my experiences with Mr Hogan had always been positive ones. He always had a warm smile and willing to help you in so many ways. I was at a basketball game last year and Mr Hogan recognized me and came out of his way to come say "HELLO". How I now feel lucky to have that moment with him.I did not know at the time he was battling an illness nor did he tell me he was. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hogan family. Dave Heim

My heart goes out to all of the Hogans in your sorrow. He was a very kind and wonderful person. Am thankful I got to meet him. It is good to know he no longer suffers but he left a hole in your lives here. May you be comforted and know peace. Take the time you need to grieve, what you need when you need it.

Dear Hogan family, Our lives were truly enriched for knowing Bill and being continuously amazed by his kind and gentle manner. To be even remotely related through Dave's marriage to Cherie made our "connection" even more special. We will miss his smiles and graciousness, and share in your loss of this "perfect gentleman." He truly was this to all who knew him.

Impressive life ... Impressive man. Mr. Hogan was so unassuming, I had no idea he served in all of those educational capacities. I have a lifetime of memories from the Hogans' garage-turned-bedroom, sneaking in the window at night (sorry), playing air-guitar with tennis/racquetball racquets, Totino's pepperoni pizzas, and feeling bad when Snoopy was locked in the utility room. Great family, Mr. and Mrs. Hogan. Save some seats in heaven ... I'm sure you've got a pretty good one. P.S. Our cuckoo clock needs a new mechanism ... Now what are we going to do?

Dear Hogans-Bill was a very special person to us. He knew my in-laws (both teachers), fixed clocks for my mother-in-law, watched our children alongside his grandchildren, and always brightened the day when you spent time with him.
