April M. Beckwith, 27, of Hebo, OR passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2006 in Tillamook, OR. April was born on April 7, 1979 in Camp Pendleton, CA.
April is survived by her fiancé, Mike Sinnott of Hebo, OR; her parents, John and Beth Nicholson of Vancouver, WA, and Jeff and Sherry Beckwith of Elkhart, IN; her brothers, John and Jason Nicholson of Vancouver, WA, and her brother and sister, Connor and Kaylin Beckwith of Elkhart, IN; and her grandmothers, Donna Evans and JoAnne Flowers of Elkhart, IN. She is also survived by her uncles and aunts, Doug (Teresa) Evans of Mishawaka, IN and Jeff (Rita) Evans of Elkhart, IN.
April graduated in 1997 from Columbia River High School. She volunteered two years for Americorps. She spent the first year in Trout Lake, WA in NW Service Academy working on watersheds, wildlife enhancements, biological surveys, and community and education projects. Her second year of service was based in the South East with NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) working with the Red Cross in Puerto Rico and Florida providing hurricane relief, some other projects included the Special Olympics as liaison for Great Britain's Boys Basketball Team, and Habitat for Humanity with former President Jimmy Carter.
April's adventurous spirit took her to Clatsop Community College where she received her degree from MERTS in Maritime Science. She was able to apply her degree at Cruise West starting as a deck hand aboard the Spirit of Alaska, rising to officer second mate and safety officer aboard the Spirit of 98. During this time she received numerous certifications including her ABS (Able Body Seaman) card, Fire Fighter certification and license to captain her 100 ton ship.
April continued her Maritime Career with (MSC) Military Sealift Command. She did her first tour as an ABS aboard the USNS Supply where she conducted underway replenishment for the United States Naval Fleet in the Atlantic. Her second tour was spent in the Persian Gulf aboard the USNS Saturn. April returned February 4, 2006 where she joined her fiancé, Mike, in Hebo, OR. She recently returned to school to pursue a bachelors degree in business at Tillamook Bay Community College. In addition to her many accomplishments, April will be remembered best for her love of family and friends, her love of pets and her beautiful smile.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home, 302 West Eleventh Street in Vancouver, WA (360)694-2537. Flowers may be sent to the Funeral Home or in lieu of flowers, April would have appreciated memorial donations to go to SW Washington Humane Society.
