Vinton Erickson

December 25, 1928 ~ September 22, 2013

Vinton Erickson, of Erickson Farms in Vancouver, WA, passed away Sun., Sept. 22, 2013 at the age of 84. He was born Christmas Day 1928 to Frank J. and Ruth (Anderson) Erickson in the family home in the Lake Shore area of Vancouver. He attended Lake Shore School and graduated from Vancouver High School with the class of 1948.
Vinton was active in farming at an early age, helping his dad, and his grandfather (Matt Anderson). He and his neighbor and future brother-in-law, Walt Yost, pruned pear trees, raised potatoes, and were very active in 4-H.
Vinton enlisted in the Army for two years of service, and served as an MP and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.
He married Helen Zimmerly in 1953, and together they raised five children on the family farm: Wendy (Mike) Stack, Debbie (Andrew) Erickson-Warner, Doug (Vickie) Erickson, Matt (Pam) Erickson, and Angie (Robert) Erickson-Combs.
Vinton did many innovative things in raising the many row crops and labor intensive farming over the years. Many of the hundreds of employees became close friends.
Vinton loved being involved in farm organizations and politics. He was Clark-Cowlitz Farm Bureau President for 12 years, served on many farm and horticulture committees, was a member of the First Evangelical Church where he served as a trustee and usher.
Vinton's hobbies included flying, parachute jumping, swimming and skiing. But his favorite pastime was talking to people - no matter where he was. It was particularly difficult for family and friends when dementia robbed him of the ability to freely communicate and joke with those around him.
Vinton is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Helen; their five children and spouses; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: David (Jen) Stack (baby Emma), Katie (Jared) Hinton (Leah-5, Luke-3), Eric Warner, Emily (Jeff) Barram, Steven Erickson, Amy (Bryce) Smith (Grayson-2), Ben (Debi) Ballard (Ben-6, Gauge-5, Brooks-2, Grey-1), and BriAnne (Brian) Saunders (Piper-7, Riley-4); and his sister, Frances Aaron of Sequim, WA.
The memorial service will be held at First Evangelical Church, 4120 NE St. Johns Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661 on Sat., Sept. 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. John Sills, long-time friend and former pastor, officiating.
Memorial gifts may be given to the church missionary fund, the , or Kaiser Hospice.
Our many thanks to the compassionate caretakers in the Garden House at Merrill Gardens for the last 1 3/4 years of dedicated care.
