Tom was raised on a farm in the Hockinson area and enjoyed outdoor activities spending his summers fishing and hunting and forging lifelong friendships with many of his Battle Ground High School classmates.
After school, Tom worked briefly in the logging industry before enlisting in the Army
and was sent overseas to fight in the Vietnam War
. After serving three years, he returned to Vancouver and met the love of his life, Pam King, while he was working at the Moose Lodge bartending. They dated only a few months before they were married on August 17, 1968.
In 1975, their first child, Jason, was born followed by their daughter, Nikki, in 1979.
Tom worked for many years as a general contractor, framing new construction homes in the 70's and early 80's. He later worked remodeling homes.
Tom enjoyed spending time with his friends at the VFW
post 7824 where he was a life member, and sharing a good drink and cigars at Shanahan's Pub. He especially enjoyed reading western books and watching western movies. He also liked to share his advice on the stock market to anyone who would listen and stayed current on political events.
