Robert W. Hamel

August 5, 1953 ~ July 25, 2013

Robert Hamel, 59, of Vancouver, WA, passed away on July 25, 2013, after a very hard battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 5, 1953 in Yakima, WA to David and Dixie Hamel. He attended AC Davis High School in Yakima where he met his bride, Renae. He was also a star athlete in cross country and track. They both graduated in 1972.
After high school, Robert served for six years in the Army National Guard and worked for Alcoa Aluminum in Vancouver, WA. He also served as a volunteer firefighter while attending Portland Community College where he earned his degree in Fire Science.
Robert was hired as a full-time firefighter at Clark County Fire District 6 in May, 1996 where he worked until taking medical leave in September, 2012.
Robert enjoyed being outdoors. He always looked forward to an annual fishing trip in Alaska with a group of his fellow firefighters. He also loved riding his firefighter edition Harley-Davidson motorcycle and spending lots of time boating on Lake Merwin with Renae, but was happiest when he spent time with his grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife of 39 years, Renae; daughter, Julie Martell (Alan) and son, Andrew Hamel (Jennifer), both of Vancouver; grandchildren, Ashlynn Martell, Liam Martell, and Dylan Hamel; and brothers, Tom Hamel (Suzanne), Mike Hamel, John Hamel and Charles Hamel (Mary Ann).
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Wed., July 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Crossroads Community Church, 7708 NE 78th St., Vancouver, WA 98662.
