Orrin Agrimson Obituary

ORRIN O. AGRIMSON
August 29, 1923 ~ September 2, 2013

Orrin O. Agrimson, 90, of Vancouver, WA, who was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star in WWII, died Sept. 2, 2013. He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Sebeka, MN, to Peter and Thea Agrimson. His mother died when he was seven months old and Orrin was raised by an aunt and uncle on their farm in Woden, IA.
In 1942, Orrin enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific, including on Leyte Island and Cebu Island.
After the war, Orrin entered college and landed a job at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. That started a long career in medical work.
He owned Criticare of Oregon and Puget Sound Medical Services, companies that supplied hospitals with medical equipment. He served on the board of directors of Portland's Emanuel Hospital.
Committed to helping others in business, Orrin served as a counselor for the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). He also was a member of the Rotary Club of Vancouver and the American Legion.
Proud of his Norwegian heritage, Orrin was an active member of the Sons of Norway. He reveled in taking guests to the holiday lutefisk and lefsa feast at the club in Vancouver's Hough neighborhood.
Orrin was the consummate host. He was known for lively times at gatherings and was not shy about serving the Norwegian drink aquavite at special occasions.
He enjoyed salmon fishing at the Washington coast and preparing the catch. He loved feeding the birds that flocked to his home and the sunsets over Vancouver Lake. His travels with wife June took him to Norway, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.
He had a caring nature and won friends easily.
Asked at his 90th birthday party the secret for surviving nine decades, he simply said, "Have fun."
Orrin is survived by his wife of 43 years, June, at home; sons, Kim and Tom of the Portland area; three daughters, Laurie of Minneapolis, MN, Carol of Hiroshima, Japan, and Cathy of Portland; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his step-children, Marc Berg and Brian Berg of Vancouver and Susan Turgeon of Hawaii; seven grandchildren; and his brothers, Paul and Robert of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kelly; and three sisters.
A celebration of life is pending.

It was such a treasure to be a part of Orrin and Junes life. Orrin is a kind, intelligent, outgoing and easy to love man. Though time with him was short, he impacted my life deeply, and I will always be grateful for both he, and June. Heartfelt condolences and blessings to June and family.

June and family, I am so glad I had the chance to know Orrin. What a delight. If it was not for the miles between us.... we would definitely have had alot more days together sharing a cold beer and some good music. I have such great memories of trips to WA. The summer of 1971 spent in the Agrimson household is definitley a highlight. Our trip to Saddle Mt. Park, hike up Mt. Hamilton, lounging on Indian Beach, checking out the portland zoo, the rasberry picking job Mary and I had that we quit after 2 days, back yard BBQ's, Orin putting up the tent for me and Mary to camp out in the backyard (with our matching PJ's). What a great laugh Orrin had and good sence of humor. Even though our visits have been few and far between I always considered June and Orrin like second family. Like the saying goes, we never truely loose the ones we love, part of them stays with us forever. Hugs to June, Marc, Susan, Brian, Kelly, Lori, Carol, Tom, and Kathy. I am sure Orrin and Mary are smiling down on us.

June and Family:
We have many good memories of Orin when our families were young at St. Paul Lutheran Church and later at Sons of Norway Columbia Lodge 058. Also his connection with Peterson, MN where Lois' mother also lived at one time.
We pray for strength, courage, comfort and peace now and in the days ahead.

Even though 40 years have past, I have never forgotten Orrin and June. They were the type of neighborhood parents that you could turn to for guidance and support during those troubled teen age years when you were trying to figure which way your life was going. I am glad to hear Orrin lived a long wonderful life. I am honored to have known him and send my love and condolences to Kim, June and Marc.

I am so sorry to hear of Orrin's passing. He was the nicest man...I fondly remember gatherings at the Agrimson home from my childhood. I vividly remember when fed me my first bite of caviar at the age of 9 or 10, and took a picture to document my reaction (yuck! :)) June and family-I am so sorry for your loss.

Dearest June, Brian and family, it is with a heavy heart that I send to you my heartfelt condolences.
Orrin was a great man and he will be missed by many. Many times I have told the story of the time I accompanied Orrin on one of his fishing adventures in Astoria. I was about 15/16 years old and went fishing with Orrin whom I had only met a couple of times out on the fishing charter. While on the boat he gave me a nudge and told me he had paid my entry fee into the prize $ pool for first fish, most fish and biggest fish between the 12 men on the boat. Not a minute passed and Orrin's line hit and he snagged the first fish of the day and claimed his $12 prize from the other 11 fellows on the boat. As Orrin basked in his glory I my line hit and I proceeded to reel in 6 fish that day including a beautiful 42 pounder. We were the Champions of the day and between the two of us we swept the whole prize pool. I was one of the greatest days of my life and from that day on Orrin was and always will be a special person in my heart!
June, you and Orrin have always been very special to me and my heart goes out to you and the whole Agrimson/Berg families. He was a special guy and he touched so many with his calm gentle approach. We will all miss Orrin, but more importantly we will all fondly cherrish remember the many times that he touched our lives and our hearts.

All my love, Wayne Jr
