George Biber Obituary

GEORGE MARCUS VAN BIBER
April 7, 1921 ~ November 8, 2013
"George was a wonderful father and husband, successful businessman and a great storyteller."

George Marcus Van Biber, 92, formerly of Vancouver, WA, passed away in Portland, OR. He was born April 7, 1921, to Neva and James Van Bibber, in the town of Lyle, Klickitat County, and went home as a newborn to the Glenwood Valley, in the foothills of Mt. Adams. He spent wonderful years there, exploring Mt. Adams on horseback, and had many delightful stories of those years. He graduated from R. A. Long High School in 1939, and joined the Navy in early 1941. He served for the duration of the war on the destroyer Drayton as radioman. His ship left Hawaii in December 1941, only a day or two before the attack on Pearl Harbor, returned there soon after, and was active in the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Guadalcanal campaign and later in the Philippines.
After the war, George began a long career with Bonneville Power, and soon married Marge Lant. They had five daughters, Karen (Sublimity, OR), Gretchen (Gig Harbor, WA), Susan (Portland, OR), Ines (Lake Oswego, OR), and Preeda (Thailand). The family enjoyed priceless experiences through hosting Ines and Preeda as exchange students. George now has 13 adult grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
George and Marge enjoyed many years of travel before her death in 1991. They first visited their daughters, Ines in Brasil, and later Preeda in Thailand, and also visited the areas in Europe where Marge served as a nurse in WWII. After Marge died, George married Chris DeLong and they also enjoyed more wonderful travel experiences. Chris died in 2010.
George loved music and worked to foster that same love in his family. He read widely, and had rich memories of his many work, family and travel experiences.
A memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 905 NW 94th St., Vancouver, WA, at 10:00 a.m on Wed., Nov. 13, 2013. Private interment will take place at Lyle-Balch Pioneer Cemetery in Klickitat County.

Gretchen,
My sincere condolences to you and your family. Seeing your Dad's photo here reminded me of the time I met him in a local restaurant. I saw the family resemblance and got up the nerve to ask him if you and he were related. What a delightful man, even in that brief encounter! You are in my thoughts and prayers. Bless you all.
