Johannes Voogt Obituary

JOHANNES "JOE" JACOBUS VOOGT
August 12, 1922 ~ November 24, 2017
"Joe always enjoyed a good joke
and had a ready smile, accompanied by
that special twinkle in those sky-blue eyes."

"Joe" Voogt was born on August 12, 1922 in Ouden Hoorn, the Netherlands, to parents Benjamin and Lyntje (Klok) Voogt. He passed peacefully into heaven at age 95, surrounded by family at home on November 24, 2017.
Joe was one of 6 children born into a farming family. He received a high school/trade diploma specializing in farming. During his early years he was a member of a billiards club and played on a soccer team.
During World War II he continued to work on the family farm until receiving papers ordering him to work in a German factory. At that point he chose to join the Dutch Resistance Movement and went "underground" for some time, while continuing to work on a farm for a mutual sympathizer.
After the war was over, he met and married the love of his life, Cornelia "Corrie" Groeneveld. They made the decision to immigrate to the U.S. and 2 months after their wedding made the trip by boat, then train to Camas, WA. Eventually he was hired by the Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1984.
Joe's greatest passions were fishing, gardening, playing cards, watching European soccer matches on TV, and spending time with family, particularly his grand and great-grandchildren. Camping trips to the beach and bus trips to Reno created fond memories for him. He lovingly cared for his wife, Corrie, during her terminal illness for the last ten years of her life.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of integrity, hard work, perseverance, love and compassion for his family.
Joe is survived by a sister, Coba v.d. Blink, in the Netherlands; a son, Ben (Barbara) Voogt; a daughter, Marilyn (Fred) Oltmann; 4 grandchildren: Joe (Neoma) Voogt, George (Jana) Voogt, Jeremy (Jennifer) Oltmann, and Missy (Nathan) Kipp; 5 great-grandchildren: Samantha Voogt, Ben Voogt, Maya Voogt, Hunter Voogt, and Anara Kipp; and numerous family friends that all knew him as "Opa".
He was preceded in death by his wife, Corrie, in 1993; and a grandson, Miles, in 2005.
We, as a family, would like to say a special word of thanks to the caregivers and staff of Visiting Angels, Community Home Care and PeaceHealth Hospice SW for their love and support while helping to care for our beloved father and Opa.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sun., Dec. 3, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Fern Prairie United Methodist Church, 26112 NE Brunner Rd., Camas, WA 98607.
