Steve Haunreiter Obituary

STEVE HAUNREITER
January 10, 1944 ~ August 16, 2014

"The mountains are calling and I must go…"

Steve Haunreiter of Camas, WA was born in Seattle, WA. He graduated from Edmonds High School in 1962, and studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington. At this time he met his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary Bruce.
In 1968, Steve moved from Edmonds to Camas to start a career at Crown Zellerbach Paper Company. There he was a process engineer, project engineer and pulp mill superintendent. He retired from Georgia Pacific after a distinguished career of 40 years.
Steve and Mary raised their three sons in Camas, as well as eight Vietnamese children that he loved as his own. In 1996, they built their dream home along the Little Washougal River in Fern Prairie, which has served as a gathering place for their many children and grandchildren.
Steve was a community volunteer, and his life was focused on service to others. He was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 565 in Camas for over 20 years, and was recognized with the Presidential Scout Master award of merit, as well as the prestigious Silver Beaver award. Steve served as an active member of the Camas Lions Club, and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated humanitarian services. Steve was also the President of Camp Currie, a youth camp serving the Clark County community.
An avid outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed road biking, especially with his sons and daughters. Steve spent his last day doing what he loved, biking with some of his children.
Steve is survived by his wife, Mary; his ten sons and their wives, Kurt and Raquel, Erik and Rachel, Bruce and Laura, Duc and Huong, Trong and Trang, Hoang and Mai, Nhat and Tam Phuc, Cong and Susana, Chinh and Hong, Long and Megan, and his daughter Ngoc; as well as 21 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Jerry and Keith; and his sisters, Karen and Marty.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Camp Currie in Camas, Washington.
There will be a celebration of Steve's life for friends following a private family service. Please contact Straub Funeral Home for information on the time and location of the celebration; 360-834-4563.

I worked for Steve at the Camas mill...always handled himself in a calm and collected manner.
He was one of a kind.

Ed & I didn't know Steve as we worked in a different part on the mill. All the people that worked for Steve loved him and said he practiced unconditional love all his life.
I thought this reading from James 2,3 was appropriate to describe the way Steve lived his life.

My brothers and sisters What good is it for a person to say," I have faith" if his or her actions do not prove it? Can that faith save him? Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don't have enough to eat. What good is there in your saying to them " God bless you, keep warm and eat well", if you don't give them the necessities of life? This is how it is with faith. If faith is alone and has no actions, then it is lifeless.

Our deepest sympathy for Mary and her family.

Thank you all for your kind messages about Steve - our husband, brother, father and grandfather. He died doing something he loved and with some of his beloved children. Steve loved children and his grandchildren were his greatest joy - followed by his love of woodworking and riding his bicycle. He leaves a huge hole in our family and our lives.

Steve and I worked closely together on the Camas Modernization; he was the mill representative and I was the engineering representative on the pulp mill part of the project. We travelled together and worked together on a daily basis. Steve's contributions made the project a success.

We climbed Mt Hood together.

He is a great guy in addition to being a good engineer and will be missed.

Steve was a very faithful blood donor with the Oregon and SW WA Blood Program. He is an honored member of our “Tree of Life” with over 100 donations. Steve was passionate about donating blood, coming in every 56 days. We are thankful and appreciate him for the time he spent with us during each of his donations. Since each donation can help up to 3 patients in our community, Steve has saved over 300 lives. We will miss him greatly.

Steve was the oldest of our Haunreiter cousins. A soft spoken man, he led by example and was a wonderful son, brother, cousin, husband and father. We were lucky to have him in our family and our loss is enormous. May you rest in peace Steve and may your family feel our hugs and hear our prayers today and always.

Love, Randy, Pat (Haunreiter) and Aaron Riffe

Steve was my brother. I knew him for 67 years. His craftsmanship skills were amazing. He was an electrician, a carpenter, a mechanic, a logger, a plumber, a bridge builder, a family man. Whatever skill was necessary to accomplish the task, Steve had it. He was a man of few words. One need only to look back on his life to see that actions told his story. I will always admire my older brother. I wish his family well.

Steve was my brother in law, he was a gentle kind soul and so much more. He was some one to look up to and admire. He has left us too soon and our loss is unmeasurable. He will forever be remembered and loved.

Usually after club rides, we relax over coffee and talk. Steve was mostly quiet, listening and smiling. When he did speak up or voice an opinion, I remember we all listened. I liked and respected Steve. I am very sorry for your loss and wish you all the kind of strength Steve had.

I rode with Steve on the Wed. VBC Earthquake ride. Steve was the strong, silent type. When I first met Steve we went on a ride from Vanc. to McMeninens in Forest Grove. A demanding ride with a big climb up German town road. Also riding in a pace line with other riders. We were duly impressed with Steve and his cycling abilities. I'm going to miss seeing that big Ford pickup come in with his bike in the back on Wed mornings Earthquake ride.
