April 16, 1922 ~ Aug. 12, 2014

Virginia Hankins, 92, passed way in Vancouver, WA on Aug. 12, 2014. She was born April 16, 1922, at home on a farm near Hurley, SD, to Danish immigrants, Hans and Maggie Nielsen. After graduating from Hurley High School, she moved to Vancouver, WA, where she married Earl C. Hankins in 1942.
After the war, Earl and Virginia returned to Turner County, SD, where they farmed until returning to Vancouver in 1955.
While raising her family, she worked at St. Joseph's hospital and Del Monte Cannery.
When Earl retired from Oregon State, they traveled the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. They made it to all the states but five. They both loved to fish and spent many summers on the coast salmon fishing. Virginia loved to draw and has done many charcoals for family and friends. She also loved embroidering and spent many winter evenings making pillow cases for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Virginia is survived by her children, Ramona Clapp (John) of Vancouver, Ronald Hankins (Carol) of Vancouver and Marlys Ashburn (Harry) of Veneta, OR; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and her sister, Slyvia Awe of Vancouver, WA.
Earl and Virginia had 56 years of marriage before he passed in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Donald; and her sisters, Mildred and Florence.
A memorial service is planned for Virginia on Mon., Aug. 25th, at 12:00 noon at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
In lieu flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kaiser Hospice.

I always loved visiting with Virginia while visiting my mother, Elaine Mellert, at Cascade Inn. Virginia was a dear friend to my mother and I remember they often watched Jeopardy together. Two wonderful women who are no longer with us. My deepest sympathy to you. Lois Mellert, Eureka, CA

Ramona, Ron and Marlys,
I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. She has been such a good friend since our boys played little league years ago. Every time I came back to Vancouver to visit my family I made time to visit with Virginia too, she was like family to me. We always had such a good time sharing what our kids and grandkids were doing. I know you will miss your Mom greatly, remember she is in excellent hands now with God and your Dad. Love to you all.
