MARGARET CONNER HILL
February 26, 1913 ~ April 5, 2014
Our Mother and Grandma left us Saturday, after a short illness. When she died, her children and grandchildren were by her side. While we are saddened by her loss, we take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her husband of 64 years, Eino Hill.
Her early childhood experienced engendered an appreciation for life and she passed this appreciation on to all whole lives she touched. Growing up, as she did, with many brothers and sisters, her passion was her family. Besides her children and many grandchildren great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, she had many nieces and nephews who were in constant contact and she loved us all and we loved her and were devoted to her. She always had a kind word, a sweet smile or a warm hug when we needed it most. She lived by the Golden Rule and taught us to do the same. Ever the positive role model she lived another simple rule: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." All who met her recognized her welcoming, inclusive nature and soon were calling her Grandma.
She was the last surviving graduate from the Battle Ground High School Class of 1932. She met the love of her life, Eino Hill, and married him in 1935. Together they survived the Depression and the war, raising four children on their thirty-five acre farm near Brush Prairie, WA. Together they build a wonderful life that centered on family and extended family, and community. Additional, they were longstanding members of the UFKB&S Lodge, an organization which brought people of Finnish heritage together. Later in life they joined the Elks. Margaret was also involved in breast cancer awareness, having twice been a cancer survivor.
She loved games and sports of all kinds. She was an avid Pinochle player, Bingo enthusiast and Bunco player, and could often be found at the dining room table placing a few hands of Old Solitaire or luring her unsuspecting grandchildren into a game of Yahtzee. She followed the local sports franchises, such as the Blazers and Mariners, with fervor and when she discovered a local kid on the NASCAR circuit, she took that up too.
Margaret is survived by her four children; Larry (Bonnie) Hill, Janice (Jim) Tooley and Gladys Hill, all of Brush Prairie, and Donald (Louise) Hill of Scappoose, OR. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Raymond Hill, Shannon Fey, Matthew Hill, Jill Hoffmann, Jason Hill, Sally Nelson, D'Ann Florek, Tanya Tooley, Cari Tooley Budd, Penny Young and Traci Hill. She also leaves 28 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Please join u in a celebration of Margaret's life on Sunday, April 13, at 1:00 p.m. at the Battle Ground Elks, on South Grace in Battle Ground. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fire District 3, 17718 NE 159th St., Brush Prairie, WA 98606.
