LELAND "LEE" CHEVALIER SPICER
January 1, 1924 ~ March 28, 2014
Leland "Lee" Chevalier Spicer, age 90, passed away in Vancouver, WA, on March 28, 2014, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on Jan. 1, 1924, in Wessington, SD to Clarence and Eva Spicer. His family moved to the Battle Ground/Vancouver area in 1937.
Lee attended the University of Washington before enlisting in the Navy where he served honorably during WWII on the USS Smalley (DD-565) and USS Sierra (AD-18), as a 2nd classman. Lee used his skills to install and repair radar and other equipment on the ships until the end of WWII. His travels during the war included the Philippine Islands, Okinawa, Korea, and Shanghai.
After the war, Lee returned to Vancouver, WA, and began working for the Clark County Public Utilities District (P.U.D.), July 3, 1948 as an entry-level grounds man.
Following years of hard work and dedication, he retired as the Director of Operations in 1982.
Lee was a devoted family man, who relished his time with family and friends. He enjoyed camping, boating, water skiing, fishing, playing pinochle, spending time in the yard, NASCAR races, coaching Little League/Babe Ruth, and watching his grandchildren's sporting events.
His family, friends, and neighbors
will remember him with love and affection
for his wonderful sense of humor, friendly demeanor and smile, warm disposition, and ever-present advice. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Leland is survived by his sister, Marlys (Seely) Johnston; daughter, Debra Spicer Dollar; son, David (Jodie) Spicer; grandchildren, Kory (Mark) Dollar-Hanks, Rachel (Patrick) Dollar-Lathrop, Craig (Jessica) Spicer and Jenny Spicer; five great-grandchildren; and special friend and companion, Betty James.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Beatrice Spicer; sister, Shirley Hughes; and his granddaughter, Kelly Spicer.
A memorial service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Sun., April 6, at 10:00 a.m., 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver, WA 98686. Viewing will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Thurs., Fri. and Sat. until 11:00 a.m. Reception following to be announced.
