Dr. Howard E. Holter passed away on July 10, 2014 in Vancouver, WA. He was born January 13, 1927 to Ferdinand and Grace Holter in Goldendale, WA. The family moved to Vancouver during World War II.
Howard enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1944. During his service, his training was in the medical field. After serving in the Coast Guard, he studied pre-med and graduated from The University of Washington. Howard then continued his studies and received his medical degree from St. Louis University.
There in St. Louis, he met and married Virginia Cozean, a school teacher and singer. His residency training was in San Mateo and San Francisco, CA. He was on staff at Agnews State Hospital in San Jose, and at the VA Hospitals in Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR.
Howard enjoyed gardening and had a marvelous green thumb. He was an avid runner and completed 13 marathons and was a team runner in 5 years of Hood to Coast relays.
Howard and Virginia recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; son, Steve (Amy) Holter; daughter, Kathy (Tom) Shank; grandchildren, Gabriella Holter and Jacob Holter; and great-granddaughter, Isabella.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Donald Holter.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 401 E 33rd St., Vancouver, WA 98663.
